By Our Staff Correspondent
MUMBAI, DEC. 16. Mr. Dhirubhai H. Ambani, Chairman, Reliance
Industries (RIL), was honoured with a civic address and a civic
reception by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai today.
At a function attended by dignitaries including several
politicians and industrialists, the Mayor of Mumbai, Mr.
Hareshwar Patil praised Mr. Ambani's contribution to the society
at large.
In his acceptance speech Mr. Ambani, who was also felicitated by
Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, Maharashtra Chief Minister, touched upon
the knowledge revolution sweeping the world and said that
computer education was the key. ``To make a beginning'', he said,
Reliance Infocom, a group company, ``will arrange for computer
education and training to students of the Mumbai Corporation
schools.'' Reliance group has announced a Rs. 5 crore grant for
this purpose.
The first phase will cover 51 secondary schools. This will
benefit 68,000 children. The second phase will cover 5,000 upper
primary schools and will benefit 3.50 lakh children.
Mr. Ambani said Reliance would implement this scheme in
collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan. ``It is a small
gesture from me. A token of my feeling for Mumbai's future. My
concern for Mumbai's children. I hope this will mark a beginning
in bringing computer education to the children of our city.
Especially to those who cannot afford it,'' he said.
