Tendulkar presented Castrol award

MUMBAI, DEC. 16. Sachin Tendulkar was presented the `Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year' (Oct. 1999-Sept. 2000) at a glittering function on the lawns of the Cricket Club of India on Friday evening.

A memento and cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs was presented to Tendulkar by Castrol's chairman, Mr. S.M. Datta. Among the finalists were Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath.

Tendulkar's consistent showing in Tests and One-day internationals got him more votes from former Test cricketers who determine the winner of this award.

The runner-ups received Rs. 50,000 each. Dravid, Kumble and Srinath were present at the function. Tendulkar had won the award in 1997-98.

Yuveraj Singh was chosen as the `Castrol Junior Cricketer of the Year'. He edged out Gujarat's opening batsman and under-19 World Cup star Niraj Patel. Others in the running were Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Ravneet Ricky, Salabh Srivastav. Yuveraj received a memento and cheque for Rs. 50,000 from Mr. Polly Umrigar.

Castrol also felicitated Mumbai Ranji Trophy team which won the National championship last season.

The company's `Lifetime Achievement Award' was given to Vijay Samuel Hazare at his Baroda residence on December 12.
