SAS made more people-friendly

By Afshan Yasmeen

BANGALORE, APRIL 28. With a view to augment resources, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has made its Self Assessment Scheme (SAS) for property tax payment more ``people-friendly'' this time.

The scheme that was introduced for two months in April 2000 was extended twice on demand by property-holders. Those who had not opted for the scheme last year can now do so as the scheme will be in force from April 1 to May 31.

This time the BMP has simplified the process of paying the tax at the range-wise designated branches of Canara, Vyasa, Dena and Syndicate banks. Unlike last time, the tax-payers can collect their receipts at the bank counter itself. Besides, range-wise payment clinics have also been opened.``The response this year has been better than last year,'' the BMP Commissioner, Mr. Ashok M. Dalwai told The Hindu on Saturday. On criticism from a few people that they were issued notices by the BMP stating that the details furnished by them were wrong, Mr. Dalwai said they could pay the same amount they paid last year. The BMP had stopped issuing notices and would sort out the issue soon.

Over 2-30 lakh people opted for the scheme last year, and the BMP collected over Rs. 103 crores through it. It has set a target of collecting over Rs. 200 crores this time.
