CPI(M) assails DMK 'silence'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 28. The Tamil Nadu CPI(M) State Committee today hit back at the DMK for its ``silence'' on the proposed Hindu Munnani conference in Madurai on ``Conversions - A National Danger'', which would only ``jeopardise communal harmony.''

At the end of a two-day meeting of the State secretariat, the party, in a resolution, said the DMK attitude in keeping quiet over the activities of Sangh Parivar forces, ``just to continue in power at the Centre with the BJP'', should be ``identified'' by the people.

Alleging that the conference on conversions was to divert the people's attention from the ``discontent'' caused by the economic reforms pursued by the BJP-led NDA Government, the CPI(M) resolved to fully support the preparations for the nation-wide struggle commencing with a workers' rally before Parliament on July 24.

Commending the AIADMK Government's efforts at tackling the acute water crisis facing Chennai, the CPI(M) urged the State to ensure that water distribution was even, and also take all steps to get Krishna waters from Andhra Pradesh.

The CPI(M) condemned the DMK Government for not having taken sufficient steps in advance to mitigate the water problem in Chennai.

While the CPI(M) decided to hold talks with the AIADMK leadership and other allies of the secular alliance on the Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu due next month, the party also resolved that the alliance led by the AIADMK continue for the local bodies elections to be held in September.
