An annual, much ignored
TORENIA, an annual, is a much ignored plant even though it is
easy to grow. A low growth bedding plant, it has squarish stems.
The seeds are tiny, almost the size of sand grains. They can be
sown in a pot close to the surface. Flowering is profuse and
takes about a month and a half. The plant needs to be watered
frequently.
The flowers are velvety, like the pansy. The most common shade is
a deep purple (light blue on the inside) as in Fournieri
grandiflora. The small, funnel like flowers are often strung in a
kadambam or flower strings sold by the local flower seller.
Torenia is also available in two colours - a light mauve with
purple tips and a striking pale pink with deep pink coloured
edges. The latter is an extremely beautiful variety. Abroad, it
is known as "White wings".
All three shades add colour to a garden and would make an
eyecatching border. The humble Torenia lends itself well to
landscaping as well.
