Forex reserves up $149m
MUMBAI, OCT. 20. India's foreign currency reserves again crossed
the $45 billion mark with fresh inflows of $149 million at $45.13
billion for the week ended October 12, 2001.
Foreign currency assets rose by $149 million to $42.20 billion in
the reporting week, according to the Reserve Bank of India's
weekly statistical supplement.
The reserves had earlier touched $45 billion mark in the week
ended August 31.
Gold reserves remained static at $2,925 million and special
drawing rights at $4 million, the apex bank said.
For the fortnight ended October 5, aggregate deposits of
scheduled commercial banks rose by Rs. 12,028 crores (1.2 per
cent) to Rs. 10,50,513 crores.
Bank credit increased by Rs. 13,183 crores (2.5 per cent) to Rs.
542,538 crores. Food credit was also up by Rs. 1,941 crores at
Rs. 50,202 crores and non-food credit by Rs. 11,242 crores at Rs.
492,337 crores.
Loans and advances by RBI to the Central Government declined by
Rs. 140 crores to Rs. 7,110 crores and that to State governments
by Rs. 1,831 crores to Rs. 4,713 crores, the RBI said.
