Sena, BJP accord on civic polls
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, OCT. 20. The Shiv Sena and the BJP today reached an
accord to share nominees to chairmanship of 171 municipal
councils where the for the first time, the first citizen of each
town would be picked by voters in a direct elections in
Maharashtra. These elections are being held on party basis, also
for the first time.
While both sides refused to reveal which party gets how many
towns to put up candidates for the polls to be held on December
2, it is understood that the Sena got a relatively larger chunk
than the BJP did. Details will be known only after Mr. Bal
Thackeray approves the arrangement on October 24.
This bid to fight the civic elections jointly, including joint
campaigns and a common manifesto is significant in that the Shiv
Sena has been very critical of the BJP's style of functioning in
New Delhi and Mr.Thackeray and party newspaper Saamanahave been
openly critical of that.
