Economic growth: Sinha optimistic
By J. Venkatesan
NEW DELHI, FEB. 5. The Finance Minister, Mr. Yashwant Sinha,
today expressed optimism that the economic growth during this
fiscal year would be more than six per cent, against 5.9 per cent
projected by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO).
Talking to presspersons after a seminar organised by the Finance
Ministry, he said ``it will be more than six per cent GDP
growth.'' He felt that though the growth in agriculture would be
slow, industry would do better as exports were picking up.
These factors would have a positive effect on the domestic
production. On the agriculture front, Mr. Sinha said adequate and
timely rainfall would increase the agriculture output and the
foodgrain production had exceeded 200 million tonnes.
On the industrial front, he said the core sector industry was
poised for a good growth. He declined to be dragged into any
controversy on the Budget to be presented on February 29.
