3 civic bodies reserved for women

HYDERABAD, FEB. 5. The Government has reserved the office of
mayor to women in three of the 5 municipal corporations going to
the polls next month, namely Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and
Vijayawada. Polls to two other corporations - Hyderabad and
Rajahmundry - will be held later.
In the notification issued on Saturday, the Government set apart
35, the largest chunk of the 103 municipalities (offices of the
chairpersons) going to the polls, for the backward classes
followed by 19 for women (general), 11 for the Scheduled Castes
and two for the Scheduled Tribes. With reservation in BC, SC and
ST quota, the share of women adds up to 36. Total reservation
number 67.
Copies of the notification were released at a press conference by
the Minister for Municipal Administration, Mr. N. Mohd. Farooq,
here. He said the notification on election schedule would be
issued by the State Election Commission (SEC). He said the
exercise of reserving seats for various communities was done in
an `impartial and transparent' manner.
Warangal and Hyderabad Corporations are put in the unreserved
category. Rajahmundry will go to the SC candidate, Vijayawada to
the BC woman and Guntur BC general. Visakhapatnam and Kurnool are
set apart exclusively for women (general).
The following are the municipality-wise reservation: Backward
classes: Samalkot, Tuni, Repalle, Pithapuram, Amalapuram,
Vizianagaram, Tadepalligudem, Palakol, Kakinada, Chirala (women),
Gudivada, Kovvur (w), Koratla, Machilipatnam, Jaggayyapet,
Malkajgiri (w), Bhimavaram (w), Kagaznagar (w), Vikarabad (w),
Proddatur (w), Sangareddy (w), Khammam (w), Kamareddy (w),
Bellampalli (w), Srikalahasti (w), Anantapur , Mahbubnagar, LB
Nagar, Suryapet, Kapra, Uppal Kalan, Nalgonda, Serilingampally,
Kukatpally and Qutbullapur.(35).
Women (General): Gudur, Eluru, Medak, Bobbili, Tanuku,
Ramachandrapuram, Amadalavalasa, Srikakulam, Mangalagiri,
Bapatla, Yemmiganur, Nellore, Wanaparthi, Narasaraopet, Rayadurg,
Nizamabad, Bodhan, Siddipet and Kadiri (19).
STs: Ponnur (general), Yellandu (women).
SCs: Nidadavole, Parvatipuram, Kothagudem (w), Kandukur (w),
Nuzvid (w), Adoni (w), Guntakal, Alwal, Ramagundam, Jangaon and
Rajendranagar. (11).
