New telecom facility in Pondy from Feb. 8

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 5. A new telecom facility called `Intelligent Network' will be introduced in Pondicherry on February 8. The Telecom District Manager Mr. H. C. Mohanty said here on Saturday that Pondicherry would be the second city besides Coimbatore in the entire Tamil Nadu circle to have the facility.

Claiming that extension of the Intelligent network services was another landmark in Pondicherry telecommunications system Mr. Mohanty said, the new facility would provide specialised services such as virtual card calling, free phone and premium rate services. The entire control of this service was centred in Calcutta. This service was now available in thirty five cities in the country and nineteen more cities would be brought under the system soon.

The department had invested Rs. 23 lakhs to instal the necessary equipment.

The new service would enable the Virtual Card Calling authority holder to make calls from any telephone to any destination and have the call charges debited against the account specified by the VCC number. This would have no reference either to the calling line or to the called line. The access code for the service was 160233. After dialling this access code the caller would get the message to dial the unique ten digit VCC number allotted to each VCC holder. Then the call would get the interactive voice response for getting the required number.

The Department has prepared the VCC cards in three different formats relating to local, STD and ISD calls.

The Chief Minister Mr. R. V. Janakiraman is commissioning the new service at a function here on Feb.8, under the chairmanship of Mr. A. Balasubramanian, General Manager Telecom Department, Cuddalore.
