Shimadzu expands Indian operations

CHENNAI, FEB. 5. The $1.7 billion Japanese conglomerate, Shimadzu Corporation, providing high quality products in the fields of medical diagnostic imaging technology, scientific and analytical technology and aircraft and bio technology, plans to expand its Indian operations by making huge investments.

There is huge potential in the Indian market and the company plans to develop and market more products by making more investments for its own operations and through its Mumbai-based joint venture, Toshbro Shimadzu, Mr. Kikuo Fujiwara, Chairman Shimadzu Corporation told presspersons here today.

It plans to market high frequency type X-ray generators to meet the healthcare needs of the rural population. It is also targeting the automobile sector.

Shimadzu elemental analysis products contribute to the core idea of quality control in the metallurgical industry. It also plans to assemble environmental monitoring systems and set up a separate software development centre mainly for in-house purposes.

Estabished in 1875, Shimadzu Corporation was formed with a capital 168 billion yen. It has overseas subsidiaries in the U.S. Europe and Asia Pacific region.

The company started its direct operations in India, headquartered in Chennai for their medical imaging products and elemental analysis equipment. It will shortly be expanding the branch network.

Mr. T. S. Rajagopal, General Manager (Indian operations) has indicated that Shimadzu had established its sales and service network in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Pune, Hyderabad and Lucknow and installed the latest digital cardiac angiography systems, spiral CT scanners and the like.

The Indian operations also have achieved a substantial share in the elemental analysis equipment market.

Shimadzu also plans to make additional investments in the joint venture company, Toshbro Shimadzu, started in 1992, for the manufacture of ultrasound scanners. The plant is located in Indore, (M.P.)
