Rajesh, Harisankar leap into record books
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 5. The creation of nine new meet
records, the completion of a golden double by seven athletes and
the continued dominance of Kerala at the head of the points table
were the key features of the hectic fifth day's action in the
athletics events of the 45th National School Games at the
University Stadium here on Saturday.
And among those who shared the limelight, there were two who
really stood apart. R. Rajesh of Kerala, the winner of the triple
jump gold two days back, kicked sand at an impressive 7.03m to
eclipse Satish Kumar's three-year-mark in the boys under-17 long
jump by a centimetre and Harisankar Roy of Bengal, jumping with
the out-dated scissors style, cleared a new high of 1.80m in the
boys under-14 high jump.
The day also gave reason for S. Geetha, H.M. Jyothi, T.K. Sheeba,
Kamlesh Baghel, Sukuram Birua and Paretam Bind to celebrate after
completing a golden double each. Kerala, which took four of the
six relay golds decided this morning, enjoys an unassailable lead
of 136 points ahead of Punjab (93) and Haryana (74).
