Hussain meets Ravi Varma

THE WALLS of Apparao Galleries came alive with the works of the virtual who's who of Indian art - from Ravi Varma to M. F. Hussain. The show was unusual that many of the works came from private collections.

Among the oldest sketches were the ones by Dhurandher, done in the early 1910s and 1920s.

The drawings of M. F. Hussain on show were done in the 1960s. Some of the recent drawings of Ganesh Pyne, titled `Death dance', `Night of the Shepherd', and `The Balcony', were also on display.

Nature and life were aplenty in the works of Ramachandran.

The oil on canvas paintings of Akber Padamsee, the cityscapes of S. H. Raza, the charcoal works of Sunil Das (the horse's head) and Paramjit Singh (landscapes) added glamour to the collection.

Also lined up were the works of Doraiswamy, Jehangir Sabavala, Jogen Chowdhury, Krishen Khanna and Nazreen Mohammed.

The show is likely to travel to Calcutta next.
