Pak. panel to probe Kargil incidents
By Amit Baruah
ISLAMABAD, APRIL 3. Pakistan is reportedly setting up a
commission to probe the ``Kargil incident'', the Interior
Minister, Lt. Gen. Moinuddin Haider (retd.), was quoted as saying
in New York by The Nation newspaper today. He claimed that the
``Kargil operation'' was started by the Pakistan Army with the
consent of the then Prime Minister, Mr. Nawaz Sharif.
Lt. Gen. Haider, who is reported to have met the FBI chief, Mr.
Louie Freeh, was scheduled to discuss the all- important issue of
terrorism with his U.S. interlocutors. Separately, he was quoted
as saying that Pakistan was heading towards a ``two-party
system'' in the country. The ``two parties'' he identified were
the PML(N) and the PPP.
The Interior Minister ``appealed'' to members of the two parties
to institute reforms in their respective organisations and hold
internal elections to put in place a new leadership for fresh
general elections as and when they are held. He made it clear
that corrupt politicians would be convicted by the courts and
would not be allowed to participate in the general elections.
``They had not one but two chances to govern... but on both
occasions disappointed the masses who are now frustrated with
them.''
