NAM bid to revive spirit of cooperation
A three-day meeting of the Foreign
Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement countries began amid mixed
signals this morning in this exotic city lashed by the Caribbean
sea. Among the more than 50 Foreign Ministers from the 115
member-countries attending the conference are India's Mr. Jaswant
Singh and Pakistan's Mr. Abdus Sattar.
Match-fixing: South Africa to seek India's explanation
The South African Government and cricket
establishment today reacted sharply to the manner in which the
Delhi police handled the alleged match-fixing scandal in which
five of its players have been named. The Government said it would
contact Indian authorities to voice its concern.
More characters tumble in
Shady characters from the underworld, a
``failed film actor'', dubious non-resident Indians, mercenary
cricketers and manipulative bookies - all of them seem to have
wanted their share of the rich pie of match-fixing and betting in
cricket judging by police investigations here. The interrogation
of Rajesh Kalra - the only person to have been arrested in the
sensational scandal allegedly involving five South African
cricketers - seems slowly but surely set to blow the lid off the
racket.
'Govt. reconsidering move on white paper on ISI'
The Government was reconsidering its decision
to bring out a white paper on the activities of Pakistan's Inter-
Services Intelligence (ISI), the Union Home Minister, Mr. L. K.
Advani, said today. ``We are reconsidering the matter relating to
the publication of a white paper on the ISI,'' Mr. Advani said
during an informal interaction with journalists at the editors
conference on social sector issues here.
Congress(I) elections put off
Amid signs of growing restiveness against the
Congress(I) president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi's leadership, the party
has decided to postpone its internal organisational elections by
about 10 weeks, according to Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdha, chairman of
the party's Central Election Authority. Earlier, the enrollment
of membership was to end on April 10, but it has now been
extended up to May 31. Mr. Mirdha said a fresh schedule for the
election would be announced soon.
Pak. did not arrange Naik's visit
Pakistan today said that India, by rejecting
its offer of talks, was ``going against the trend of the times
and the will of the international community''.
U.S. will persist with sanctions against India, Pak.
Rejecting the notion that India and Pakistan
``got away'' with the nuclear tests of 1998, a senior Clinton
administration official has said that the United States will
persist with the ``very strong sanctions'' and that there is a
degree of relationship that would not be possible as long as
these two South Asian nations pursue a nuclear capability.
