New year chargs by Hindu almanac
THE Telugu New Year (Ugadi) commenced on April 5. The Tamizh New
Year, Vikrama, commenced on the April 13. The former goes
according to Lunar calculation, and the latter by Solar transit.
By the former method, Sukla Paksha Prathamai (the first day of
the waxing phase of the moon) when the Sun was moving through
Meena (Pisces), commenced at 23.42 hours on Tuesday, April 4. At
that time, the rising Lagna in New Delhi was Vrischika (Scorpio)
with the following planetary positions: Kethu in the Third;
Mercury in the Fourth; the Sun, the Moon, and Venus in the Fifth;
Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter in the Sixth; and Rahu in the Ninth.
The moon was in the second pada of Revathi, the ruling star,
which makes Meena the Rasi.
The horoscope for the birth of the Tamizh Vikrama New Year is
cast for New Delhi, when the Sun moved into Aswini 1 at 17.22
hours on Thursday, April 13. The Lagna is Kanya (identical) with
independent India's ruling Sign). The planets are disposed thus:
Kethu in the Fifth; Mercury and Venus in the Seventh; Saturn,
Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun in the Eighth; and the Moon with Rahu
in the Eleventh. The moon was in the third pada of Aslesha
(Ayilyam) star; making Kataka the Rasi.
Three important planetary transits are due in this year Vikrama.
Jupiter will move from his sojourn in Mesha (Aries) into Rishabha
(Taurus) on June 2. Saturn, who has been in Mesha for a while,
will transit into Rishabha on June 6. On August 1, Rahu and Kethu
will, as is their custom, move backwards into new Signs: Rahu
from Kataka (Cancer) into Mithuna (Gemini), and Kethu from Makara
(Capricorn) into Dhanus (Sagittarius).
Queries answered
How do the divisions of Hora, Drekkana, Navamsa, etc. help in
reading a horoscope, when there are no such divisions in the sky?
G. Sahadevan, Chennai-34.
We should make a clear distinction between what we think we see
in the sky, and the astrological divisions of the Zodiacal path
into twelve signs, and their subdivisions made by Rishis. Our
ancient seers made these divisions from revealed wisdom and by
applying intuitive as well as calculative faculties. The dividing
of a horoscope on the bases of Hora (each Sign into two);
Drekkana (each Sign into three); Navamsa (each Sign into nine),
etc. enable us to refine our predictions. The Hora Lagna is used
to predict aspects of wealth; Drekkana positions reveal nuances
of character; Sapthamsa (seven parts) division clarifies the
position regarding brothers and sisters; Navamsa helps regarding
the potential for off-spring, and so on. The Bhava Chart is
important in making interpretations from such subdivisions of
Signs.
