TDP leader killed in bomb attack

KURNOOL, APRIL 20. Mr. Bejjam Satyanarayana Reddy, also known as Satyam Reddy, a prominent TDP leader in the Panyam Assembly constituency, was killed in a bomb attack today.

Reports reaching the police here said that Mr. Satyanarayana Reddy, who is the father of the sitting TDP MLA of Panyam, Mr. Bejjam Parthasarathy Reddy, was coming to Koilkuntla from Chennampalle in his Tata Sumo vehicle. At about 11 a.m. near Paleru Vanka (stream) his adversaries, allegedly followers of Mr. Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, former Congress(I) MLA Panyam, came in two Tata Sumo jeeps in the opposite direction and rained bombs. This resulted in the death of Mr. Bejjam Satyanarayana Reddy on the spot. Injuries were sustained by his gunman, police constable Hussain (No.733), who was travelling in the jeep.Four other civilians sustained splinter injuries.

The Superintendent of Police, Mr. N. Madan Mohan, rushed to the scene of offence, and till late in the evening he was directing the investigations.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Cementnagar as an echo of the murder of the TDP leader. The police said that ten houses in Cementnagar belonging to the opposite group were ransacked and the furniture in them was brought out and set on fire. One house was damaged utilising a bulldozer. One house and one liquor shop were gutted.

Shops were closed in Koilkuntla, Betamcherla,Banganapalle and Cementnagar apprehending breakout of violence.

Mr. Bejjam Satyanarayana Reddy had unsuccessfully contested elections from the Panyam constituency. He had figured as an accused in some murder cases.
