Advocate assault case: AIADMK functionary held

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 28. An AIADMK division secretary was arrested today in connection with the advocate assault case following a road accident near Vepery last Wednesday.

Police identified the arrested person as Vijayan, AIADMK 103 division secretary.

A police traffic sub-inspector was also arrested and later released on bail in this connection.

The SI has been placed under suspension. The issue had its echo in the Madras High Court with advocates demanding action against the culprits and compensation for the injured advocate.

According to police, the advocate Mr. A. K. Venkatesh was proceeding towards the High Court in his car and Vijayan who was driving on a motorcycle were involved in a tiff near the Vepery traffic office.

The advocate, in his complaint, charged that Vijayan assaulted him and the traffic sub-inspector also hit him with a lathi.

The advocate who suffered bleeding injuries was hospitalised.

Vepery traffic police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Mr. Justice P. D. Dinakaran in the Madras High Court today cancelled the bail granted to the traffic S.I. Mr. Veerakumar.

This morning, the High Court Advocates Association moved the High Court with the plea, contending that the advocate had suffered serious injuries, including loss of two teeth and a leg fracture.

But the police had booked him under bailable sections, and the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate granted bail to the S.I.

The Judge ordered issue of notice to the police and the S.I. concerned.

Later, in the day, accepting the association's contentions, the Judge said he was cancelling the bail granted to him, because of the serious nature of the offence.

He directed the police to take action according to law.
