4 Pak. politicians charged with corruption
ISLAMABAD, MAY 1. Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau (NAB)
has completed probe against about 100 tax officials charged with
corruption, media reports said today.
The NAB had sent the list, which contained the names of four
politicians, to the chief executive secretariat, it said.
One of the major cases investigated pertains to allowing 10 per
cent discount in quantity to an importer, who had applied for
benefiting from the insertion on March 10, for importing 52,000
units of Sony and Panasonic television sets and assorted goods.
Another investigation report pertains to a palm oil case in which
the customs staff, in collusion with the importer, Saddruddin
Ganji, deprived the government of millions of rupees of duty
during the Nawaz Sharif regime.
The NAB report has also recorded a case of loss of revenue to the
tune of Rs. 135 million.
The officials involved in evasion of Rs. 85 million in taxes in
connivance with the collector of customs during 1995-96, were not
punished, the report said.
