Indian professor honoured in U.S.
WASHINGTON, MAY 1. The University of California, Berkeley, has
conferred on an Indian, Professor, Nilabh Shastri, and two other
professors its highest award for teaching, placing them among an
elite group of instructors.
Prof. Shastri teaches molecular and cell biology. The others are
Germans Prof. Claire Kramsch and Prof. Eleanor Swift. They
received the award at a formal ceremony.
Since 1959, when the award was first given, only 191 of the 4,000
professors who have taught at the University of California, have
received it.
The ceremony also included a slide presentation of each
professor's teaching methods and ideology, as well as
testimonials from present and former students.
Prof. Shastri, was quoted by a campus newspaper as having said he
was surprised that anyone would pay him money to do what he loved
most.
He tried to get to know all the students in his classes and
``make sure they understand the material. One-to-one talking is
more effective than showing people a bunch of multimedia
presentations,'' he said.
