Upset win for Gokhale
DUBAI, MAY 1FIDE master Chandrasekar Gokhale scored an upset
victory over Russian grandmaster Valeri Filippov in 55 moves in
the second round of the Dubai Open chess championships here.
Visweswaran drew his game with grandmaster Modhaki Mohamed of
Qatar after squandering away a winning advantage.
Gokhale introduced a novelty in the opening on the 12th move in a
Nimzo Indian defence. The Russian GM was totally surprised and
drifted into an inferior middle game. Gokhale won his opponent's
queen for two rooks and clinched the issue with fine technique in
the end.
IM Taleb Moussa scored his second successive victory over GM
Alexander Sorokin of Argentina. Taleb playing black, outwitted
the grandmaster in classic positional style. He opened up the
queenside and came up with an intuitive tactical sequence, which
led to an instant finish. Taleb is the only player from the host
country with two points. Twelve titled players are at the top
with two points.
Visweswaran takes on GM Validimirov Evegency of Russai, while
Gokhale will play GM Asrian Karen of Armenia. Grandmaster
Konstrantin Sakaev of Russia, is in awesome form. His victories
in the initial rounds are impressive and are technically sound.
He opts for simple positions in the middle game where he excels
to outplay his opponents. In the second round, he defeated
Guseinov in a queen's Indian defence. His superior pawn structure
gave him an undisputed advantage. He won a pawn and later
converted his advantage to victory.
