Campbell hits unbeaten 150

By P. Subramanyam

LONDON, MAY 1.

The four-day match between the touring Zimbabwean cricketers and Hampshire County Cricket Club for the Vodafone Challenge Series at Southampton ended in a draw on Sunday afternoon.

Acting captain, Alistair Campbell, officiating in the absence of Andrew Flower, continued his fine form with the bat from Saturday when he was undefeated with 108. He progressed steadily on Sunday morning, batting with absolute freedom to reach 150 not out, off 211 balls, studded with 16 fours and one six.

He was responsible for taking the Zimbabwean score to a commanding 364 for seven declared from an overnight 281 for six in its first innings. For Hampshire C.G. van der Gucht took three wickets for 75 runs.

The home side trailing by 233 runs started its second innings with a spirited knock of 44 from opener J.S. Laney, who batted with assurance hitting five fine fours. After Laney departed, skipper and former England batsman, Robin Smith (60) and W.S. Kendall (56 not out) dug in to add a comfortable 123 runs for the third wicket and see the game end in a tame draw.

lThe scores: Hampshire 131 and 234 for four in 69 overs (R. Smith 60, W.S. Kendall 56 not out, J.S. Laney 44) vs Zimbabwe 364 for seven declared in 106 overs (A.D.R. Campbell 150 not out, M.W. Goodwin 70). Match drawn.
