Govt., postal unions hold fruitful discussions
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 2. The Government today nominated a ``designated
officer'' as an immediate follow-up to the assurances given late
on Monday night to postal workers which resulted in their calling
off the indefinite country-wide strike scheduled to begin from
today.
While the Union Communications Minister, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan,
and the Minister of State for Communications, Mr. Tapan Sikdar,
expressed ``deep appreciation for the cooperative and
constructive approach of the postal unions in deferring the
strike'', the unions also reciprocated the sentiments by
observing that the ``chances of clinching the issue were better''
because of the manner in which Mr. Paswan held talks with Finance
Ministry officials.
The agreement between the Government and the postal unions also
reflected the bonhomie being expressed by both the sides after
two days of sparring.
``The discussions we had with the Ministers provided indications
of the sympathetic attitude of the department to the genuine
interest of the employees as also the extra-departmental agents''
(part-time postmen), noted Mr. G.K. Padmanabhan, General
Secretary of the Federation of National Postal Organisations.
