Court suspends Sharif property confiscation
KARACHI, MAY 2. The Sindh High Court today suspended the fine and
confiscation of property imposed on the former Prime Minister,
Mr. Nawaz Sharif, pending an appeal against his conviction and
life sentence for hijacking and terrorism, court officials said.
The two-judge bench adjourned the case till May 9.
Mr.Justice Abdul Ghani Sheikh and Mr. Justice S. A. Rabbani the
aid they would also address the admissibility of a prosecution
appeal seeking death penalty for Mr. Sharif at the next hearing.
Mr. Sharif, ousted in a military coup on October 12 last, was
convicted on charges that he attempted to prevent a commercial
plane carrying General Pervez Musharraf (now the military ruler)
and 198 other passengers from landing at Karachi on the day of
the coup.
When Mr. Sharif was sentenced to life imprisonment by an anti-
terrorism court here on April 6, he was also fined 500,000 rupees
($ 10,000), all his property was confiscated and he was ordered
to pay two million rupees as compensation to the passengers.
The prosecution has moved an appeal against the acquittal which
will also come up for hearing on may 9.
