Folio on food

Sir, - The rich diversity in food and eating habits and the remarkable ways in which the Indian food items have become global have been nicely captured in the interesting and informative articles in the Folio on food. Excellent pictures and cartoons add merit to the splendid production. Congratulations!

Our philosophy lays stress on food control for achieving mind control through the ``yoga of meditation''. Pantanjali Yoga Sasthra prescribes eating to the extent of half the capacity of the stomach, drinking water to the level of quarter and leaving the balance empty.

Eating once a day is prescribed for a `yogi'. As all cannot be great yogis, it is unfortunate that millions of Indians have to suffer from the pangs of hunger. ``Right to food'' is a basic human right and it is the duty of the rulers to honour this.

Sir, - The Folio contains an unforgettable collection of interesting articles replete with facts by eminent writers and eye-catching photographs right from the cover page to the last item on ``Relics from the past'' (which is a fitting finale to the Folio).

Hailing from Thanjavur district, I am pleased to subscribe to the views expressed in all the articles generally. The articles ``Gastronomic journeys'', ``Culinary customs'', ``The old order changeth'', ``Spice up your meal'', ``Evening picnics along the Cauvery'' and ``Dining in style'' are `gems' on the subject matter.

It is an accepted fact that with the establishment of hotel management and catering and training centres of all over India, there has been widespread availability of Indian food and fascination with its rich repertoire among the NRI communities in many countries.
