Orissa heat wave toll up
BHUBANESWAR, MAY 7. The death toll in the heat wave in Orissa has
risen to nine, according to official sources. The toll increased
after information about two deaths were received from Sundergarh
district yesterday. The district accounted for the highest number
of four deaths followed by Dhenkanal (two), Angul, Mayurbhanj and
Kalahandi (one each), the sources said.
Diarrhoea not due to water
Meanwhile, the Government today denied charges that drinking
water supplied to Berhampur from Bhubaneswar by train had caused
the outbreak of diarrhoea in the South Orissa town which claimed
two lives.
The water sent to Berhampur was purified and tested before being
sent, an official release said here. A second quality test was
conducted at Berhampur before it was distributed to the people,
the release said.
Two persons died of diarrhoea in Berhampur, while over 200 people
fell ill in the past few days. Most of the people have recovered
after being treated in hospitals or privately at home.
The situation in Berhampur town was completely under control and
the health department was fully prepared to meet any eventuality,
the release said.
