CM to consult intelligentsia

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MAY 12. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, has decided to hold a meeting with the intelligentsia, professionals and social scientists to discuss suggestions recently made by them to end naxalite violence.

It may be recalled that several groups had come together to appeal to the Government and the extremist groups to cease armed activity, and this should be followed by a meaningful dialogue between the Government and the revolutionary groups. The People's War Group responded with a statement, saying that they were prepared to hold a dialogue provided the Government fulfilled certain conditions, and this was taken to represent a positive approach.

Mr. Chandrababu Naidu today held a detailed review meeting on the appeal issued by the Committee of Concerned Citizens, newspaper editors and professors of Osmania University, addressed to the extremists and people affected by them, an official statement said. It added: ``The Chief Minister reiterated that the State Government was committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring peace and prosperity for people. He said every citizen wants peace, tranquility and harmony in the State and it was the responsibility of the Government to provide it.

``Mr. Naidu said that the State Government was devoted to attain such a position and would carry all sections of people with it. He said an elaborate debate was needed as the problem had persisted for decades and several possibilities and alternatives would be explored in this matter. The opinions and ideas of the intelligentsia, professionals, social scientists, political leaders and other social organisations should be discussed thoroughly, and a meeting for the purpose would be organised soon'', Mr. Naidu added.
