Hitech gadgetry for forensic science dept.

CHENNAI, MAY 12. The forensic science department is formulating a long-range perspective plan for technological upgradation to be implemented at a cost of Rs. 175 crores over the next decade, the Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, said announced in the Assembly today.

The plan envisages technological upgradation in computer forensics, digital image processing, forensic engineering and material science, forensic animation, forensic robotics, electronic and telecommunication crime, voice identification, audio and video crime, forensic pharmacology, plant, invertebrate and microbial biology, wild life, and forensic polygraphy, according to the policy note tabled by the Chief Minister in the House.

Police Personnel Management System, Police Transport Information System, Police Stores Information System, Message Transmission System over microwave network by using computers, Portrait Building System, Fingerprint Analysis and Criminal Tracing System, Traffic Analysis System, and Crime- Criminal Information System, were the major packages developed for accelerating the different processes in the police department, he said.

Training was being imparted to all the staff for effective utilisation of the packages.

As part of modernisation of the police force, 2,000 computers were being procured over a period of five years for divisional police officers in the districts and for all police stations in the commissionerates.

A message service using the e-mail system was being developed for all the areas in Tamil Nadu. Intranet facilities would be provided to all the wings and branches within the city for better coordination.

A police resource information or planning system would be created for better utilisation of the available resources.

The selection process for 1,000 women constables was nearing completion. The process for recruiting 4,000 men constables would be completed before June.

The land for the construction of a police academy near Vandalur had been handed over to the police department by the revenue department.

The government was examining the feasibility of constructing the building for the academy on a `turnkey' basis, he said.

The government would concentrate on equipping the fire services department with modern gadgets, he added.
