Mamata 'offers to resign'
By Malabika Bhattacharya
CALCUTTA, MAY 19. The Trinamool Congress supremo, Ms. Mamata
Banerjee, tonight asked the BJP national leadership to prevent
the West Bengal BJP from marring the Trinamool's prospect in the
upcoming civic polls in Calcutta and elsewhere in the State by
fielding separate candidates.
Angry at the State BJP's unilateral decision to field candidates
in as many civic wards as possible, Ms. Banerjee, according to
sources, expressed her dissatisfaction to the BJP's central
leadership. She is believed to have offered to resign if the
local BJP continues to work against the spirit of the Trinamool-
BJP alliance, highly placed sources said.
Ms. Banerjee, however, could not be contacted for her comment.
The announcement comes at a time when Ms. Banerjee and other
Trinamool leaders are grappling with party rebels.
