Kasparov, Morozevich score victories

CHENNAI, MAY 18. World No. 1 Garry Kasparov and Alexander Morozevich from Russia opened with methodical victories in the 30th Jubilee super chess tournament at Sarajevo in Bosnia & Herzegovina on Wednesday.

The defending champion, Kasparov, had to manoeuvre a lot in the rooks and good bishop ending before scoring a full point through a tactical shot on the 39th move in mutual time scramble against Etienne Bacrot of France. In the second round, Kasparov takes on M. Adams with the black pieces.

In another big game, Alexei Shirov was unable to use his white pieces and drew with Michael Adams of England in 40 moves from a Petroff defence.

Alexander Morozevich scored a typical win with white in 27 moves against Mikhail Gurevich in a Pirc defence game to lead the table jointly with Kasparov. Ten more rounds remain to be played in the 12-player round robin tournament.
