Vijay Manjrekar XI declared winner


MUMBAI, MAY. 18. Vijay Manjrekar XI was declared winner of the 14th Sportstar Trophy - MCA under-19 selection tournament as rain washed out the final day's play in the league matches here on Thursday.

Manjrekar XI retained the trophy finishing this year's competition with 19 points from two victories and one draw. Medium pacer, Rajesh Verma of Manjrekar XI was declared the Player of the Tournament for his haul of 20 wickets in two matches. All three days of the final round matches were washed out due to unseasonal rains. At the prize distribution ceremony on Thursday, MCA Managing Committee member, Shrikant Tigadi gave away the trophy and other awards. Verma, as player of the tournament, received the late Ramakant Desai Trophy and a complete kitbag.

Phadkar XI's Shinoj Pannikar was declared the best fielder of the tournament and received a prize of Rs. 1,001 which was endowed by Mal Maddhalkar.

The four Man of the Match awards of Rs. 750 each were given to Sangram Bagul (Rangnekar XI), Bhavin Thakkar (Phadkar XI) and Rajesh Verma (Manjrekar XI). Bagul was declared Man of the Match of two occasions.

Regional Manager of The Hindu group, Mr. N. Parthasarathy, spoke on the occasion and thanked the MCA for its support.

The final points tally: Manjrekar XI - 19 points, Phadkar XI - 16, Rangnekar XI - 6 and Merchant XI - 3.
