For fish, with love
VISITORS TO the Zoological Park, Vandalur can now see a new look
aquarium, which has been given a facelift and new fish species
have been put on show.
What was a dark and hot place has now become a cool place,
befitting its name. All the 21 fish tanks have been renovated at
a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs, according to Mr. N. Krishnakumar, Park
Director. New mechanical and biological filters have been
installed in the aquarium, which looks like a shark.
Both the biological and mechanical filters have been changed in
the tanks. The biological filters help in reducing the need to
change water often and they also maintain nitrogen balance in the
tank. The mechanical filters remove the food particles and waste
materials. Part of the shark modelled aquarium is underwater,
where the authorities have released commercial fish species in
the pool. Plans are also afoot to allow the visitors to feed the
fish, say the officials.
Gold fish, sword tailed fish, cuppies, angel, zebra, shark,
piranhas and tiger oscars are some of the species in the
aquarium.
