Major threat to freedom of Press: VS

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 2. The CPI(M) politburo member, Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan, has described the draft anti- terrorism bill sent to the States by the Union Home Ministry as a major threat to the freedom of the Press.

In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said the new bill, meant to replace the TADA, could turn out to be a draconian legislation if enacted by Parliament. The TADA had given unlimited powers to the State to violate the rights of citizens. The provisions in the draft bill were even more stringent.

Under the provisions of the draft bill, journalists were expected to inform the police as soon they get information about terrorist activities.

He said failure to do so would invite imprisonment for one year. In case journalists failed to provide information sought by the police on terrorism, it could result in three years' imprisonment. All these provisions were intended to put the Press in fetters, Mr. Achuthanandan said.
