RSP nominee to file papers for RS poll on June 9

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 6. The RSP nominee for the June 23 Rajya Sabha election would file nomination papers on Friday.

The CPI(M) has assured the RSP leadership that the required number of signatures would be available from the CPI(M) legislators. The RSP secretariat, which met here late on Monday evening, is understood to have decided to field the former MP, Mr. N. K. Premachandran. However, the party is keeping its cards close to its chest on account of the CPI threat that its nominee would be in the fray if the CPI(M) refused to allot to it one of the two Rajya Sabha seats that the LDF is certain to win.

Asked who would be his party's nominee, the RSP State secretary, Prof. T. J. Chandrachoodan, said the name could be divulged only after the party State committee meeting here tomorrow. He said the party would stick to certain principles in candidate selection and that seemed to hint at Mr. Premachandran getting the nod. The confusion, it seemed, was the result of the CPI talking in terms of fielding the former Chief Minister, Mr. P. K. Vasudevan Nair, as its nominee.
