MP project wins Stockholm award

BHOPAL, JUNE 6. The Gyandoot Project of Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh has bagged the prestigious Stockholm Challenge Award in the Public Service and Democracy category.

The Mayor of Stockholm presented the Stockholm Challenge Award to the representatives from Madhya Pradesh. Those who attended the Award ceremony included eminent Information Technology experts from Europe as well as prominent citizens of Stockholm.

The Dhar district Collector, Mr. Rajesh Rajoura, and the CEO of the District Panchayat, Mr. Amit Agrawal, who represented Madhya Pradesh, received the crystal trophy at a glittering function held at the Blue Room of the City Hall in Stockholm on Monday.The Stockholm Award is sponsored by six international companies in the IT and Telecom sector. The Chairman of the European Telecom Commission has said that the Award is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in this category.

Gyandoot is the name given to an intranet network of computers in 21 major centres in five blocks of Dhar district. Under the project, intranet computers have been installed at village panchayats and are named as Soochnalayas (information kiosks).

Over five million villagers living in over 600 villages covered under 311 village panchayats have an easy access to information through this project whereas earlier they had to take long journeys to the tehsil and district headquarters. Each Soochnalaya caters to approximately 15 village panchayats covering 25 to 30 villages.
