Advani in Jerusalem on a five-day visit
JERUSALEM, JUNE 13. The Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani, arrived
here tonight on a five-day tour to study Israeli security system,
particularly counter-terrorism and border management.
Mr. Advani's visit, first of a senior political leader here after
a long time, is intended to know from Israel various mechanisms
of countering terrorism and managing tough borders, official
sources said here.
During his visit, Mr. Advani, is scheduled to meet the Israeli
President, Mr. Ezer Weizman, the Prime Minister, Mr. Ehud Barak,
the former Premier, Mr. Shimon Peres, the Interior Minister, Mr.
Natan Sharansky, and top police and security officials.
In order to benefit from Israel, the Home Minister is scheduled
to visit northern border areas of Israel to study border
management that country has displayed so remarkably.
Mr. Advani, would discuss with Israeli leaders the situation in
the Indian sub-continent while his Israeli counterparts would
brief him about the Middle east peace process and other issues of
regional importance.
Mr. Advani, would also pay a visit to the Palestinian areas and
hold discussions with the Palestinian leader, Mr. Yasser Arafat.
His Israel visit would be followed by a trip to the United
Kingdom and France to study prevailing security systems there.
Mr. Advani, on his first foreign tour after taking over office,
is accompanied by a high-level team comprising the Home
Secretary, Mr. Kamal Pande, the Joint Secretary (security) Vinay
Kumar, the BSF Director General, Mr. E. N. Rammohan, the CBI
Director, Mr. R. K. Raghavan, and Intelligence Bureau Director,
Mr. Shyamal Dutta.
