The Week Ahead
MERCURY, the planet that rules all forms of communication, begins
to go Retrograde on June 23 and will remain this way until July
18. During this time, things that fall under the influence of
Mercury, such as computers, telephones and automobiles tend to
have more than their usual share of problems. Some astrologers
advise avoiding all involvement with Mercury type activities
until Mercury goes direct.
In this day and age, however, that isn't particularly helpful or
realistic advice. You need not be afraid of Mercury going
Retrograde. Instead, turn your sights inward, meditate, and spend
time rethinking your plans and goals.
Queries answered
Can auspicious functions be performed during the periods marked
as Thyajyam?
B. Ashwini, Choolaimedu, Chennai.
IMPORTANT work and auspicious functions ought to be avoided
during Thyajyam. The most important of the proscribed Thyajyam
periods relates to Nakshatras, which appear in cycles of 27 -
starting from Aswini and going up to Revathi. Nakshatra Thyajyam
is for a spell of four Nazhigais, namely 4 x 24 minutes. That
spell of an hour and 36 minutes is reckoned from the end of
specified Nazhigai-s after the beginning of the rule of a star.
For instance, for Aswini, Thyajyam starts at the end of 50
Nazhigais. and will end at 54 Nazhigais.
