Crucial NC meet begins in Srinagar
The crucial working committee meeting of the
ruling National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir began here
today to decide on its continuance in the National Democratic
Alliance (NDA). Though no indications were available on the
future course of action, the members were not in an upbeat mood.
NHRC concern over attacks on Christians
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
today granted two more weeks to the Centre and State Governments
to inform it about the steps taken by them to meet the situation
arising out of attacks on Christians and their institutions.
MTNL strike deferred
In response to an appeal by the Union
Communications Minister, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, the Mahanagar
Telephone Nigam Limited employees today put off their proposed
indefinite strike from tomorrow.

Singapore, India and China could explore ways

Dalit case: Bihar Minister gets the sack
The Bihar Minister of State for Cooperation, Mr.
Lalit Kumar Yadav, has been dismissed from the Council of
Ministers and expelled from the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal as
well, for his alleged complicity in the wrongful confinement and
torture of two Dalits.
Old Fiji capital burns
Fiji's old capital, Levuka, was set alight today
as the country slipped into increasing lawlessness following the
signing of an accord between the coup leaders and martial law
authorities yesterday.
Thailand backs India's bid for U.N. seat
The visiting Foreign Minister of Thailand,
Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, today discussed reforms in the United Nations
with his Indian counterpart, Mr. Jaswant Singh, as part of the
attempt by developing countries to make the multilateral body
more relevant and responsive in the contemporary context.
Thailand is also understood to have agreed in principle with
India's attempt to obtain a seat in the UN Security Council.
Delhi, Canberra review Fiji situation
India and Australia today reviewed the
current political situation in Fiji and agreed to stay in close
touch in finding ways to promote a return to constitutional rule
there.
