TULF wants LTTE brought into peace process

By Nirupama Subramanian

COLOMBO, JULY 10. The moderate Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) today told the Sri Lankan President, Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, that it was imperative to bring the LTTE into the peace process for an effective resolution of Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict.

This was stated by the TULF after a marathon meeting between the party's representative and the President on the proposed draft Constitution agreed upon by the People' Alliance (PA) and the United National Party (UNP) last week.

Ms. Kumaratunga said last month that the LTTE was free to participate in the devolution process if it joined the democratic mainstream. The LTTE rejected the proposals as ``ludicrous''.

The TULF said it ``impressed upon the President the vital importance of the proposed Constitutional formulations being acceptable, particularly in regard to the structure of the state, the unit of devolution and powers relating to state land.''

Present at the meeting were the President, the Minister for Constitution Affairs, Mr. G. L. Peiris along with a few other Cabinet members. The TULF secretary-general, Mr. R. Sampanthan, its senior vice- president, Mr. V. Anandasangari and Mr. Joseph Parajasingham and Mr. Mavai Senathirajah, senior parliamentarians, attended the meeting.
