Fake currency: State seeks CBI help
By Our Staff Correspondent
PATNA, JULY 10. The CBI has decided to inquire into incidents of
pumping of fake currency from across the Indo-Nepal border by
Pakistan's Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI) in particular.
The announcement was made in the Bihar Assembly today by the
Water Resources Minister, Mr. Jagdanand Singh, while replying to
a short-notice question of Mr. Navin Kishore Prasad Singh (BJP).
He said that the CBI Director had assured the State DGP to take
up the cases referred by the Government.
The Minister said that 162 cases were lodged with different
police stations in the State and in some cases the involvement of
the ISI had been detected.
He said that it was beyond the capacity of the State police to
handle the case as it involved other countries.
He conceded that the districts having a border with Nepal were
specially targeted for pumping fake currency by the ISI.
He said that there was a need to check the entry of such elements
from across the international border, something which only a
Central agency could do.
The Minister, however, added that the Government has set up a
task force to effectively curb the activities of foreign
organisations and prevent them from disrupting law and order and
normality in the State.
Replying to a supplementary, Mr. Singh denied knowledge that
police were handicapped in pursuing the cases to their logical
conclusion due to the apathy of officials of the Reserve Bank of
India and commercial banks who let off customers depositing the
fake notes without lodging cases against them.
