17 LTTE militants killed in attacks
COLOMBO, AUG. 11. Sri Lankan Air Force jets bombarded a number of
LTTE bases in the rebel-controlled, north-eastern Mullaithivu
district today as 17 Tamil militants were killed in other
offensives by the Army in the country's north and eastern areas.
The MIG-27 fighters, recently acquired from Ukraine, were pressed
into action for the second time this week, and resorted to
precession bombing on several LTTE bases in the Vanni region,
controlled by the rebels, State radio said.
Eight injured in blast
Meanwhile, unidentified people exploded a home-made bomb at a
school music concert in Sri Lanka's northeast, wounding eight
persons, police said today.
The injured included four children, said Mr. I. Perera, a police
officer. The concert was organised by a local television network
in Polonnaruwa, a town 170 km northeast of Colombo on Thursday.
