M & M Bolero GLX's Chennai launch
By Our Corporate Reporter
CHENNAI, AUG. 11. Mahindra & Mahindra, the largest Indian
manufacturer of multi-utility vehicles, today announced the
launch of its latest utility vehicle `Bolero GLX' here today.
Addressing presspersons on the occasion, Mr. B. K. Subbaiah,
senior general manager, Automotive Sector (M & M), said the
Bolero GLX was in response to the needs of the urban consumer to
match toughness with smoothness.
It was aimed at those who wanted an attractive, powerful utility
vehicle that offered car like comfort and sheer driving pleasure.
Mr. Subbaiah said the utility vehicle market was undergoing a
transformation and it would emerge as an alternative to passenger
cars for the style-conscious and discerning urban consumer. He
said the product was totally indigenous and an investment of only
Rs. 40 crores was made for creating the facilities at its
existing plant to produce 800 to 1000 vehicles a month against
Rs. 500 crores required for a new state-of-the-art plant.
Priced at Rs. 4.89 lakhs (ex-showroom, Chennai), the vehicle has
a host of features such as air-conditioning, power steering,
power windows, audio system and central locking.
The company is also coming out with a premium model with bucket
seats and rear entertainment system from Visteon that includes a
console mounted with a DVD player and an LCD screen.
It would also have a global positioning system (GPS) with Mumbai
and Delhi maps. While some components of the GPS would be
imported the software part would be developed indigenously.
This model would cost Rs. 1 lakh more. Important among other
features are: seat belt warning lamp with audio chime, door open
warning, keyless entry with remote and electronic speedo with two
trip meter option.
Meanwhile the company is also going ahead with its plans for
`Scorpio' which would spearhead M & M's entry into the next
generation of vehicles.
These vehicles will role out of the assembly line by the end of
next year.
The Scorpio will be introduced in three variants. The upper-end
variant will be in the Mitsubishi Pajero category.
