Humpy holds Emms

CHENNAI, AUG. 11. Former World under-12 girls champion Koneru Humpy held fourth seed GM John M. Emms to a creditable draw in the 10th and penultimate round of the Smith & Williamson British chess championship at the Millfield School in Somerset on Thursday.

Humpy, 13, from Vijayawada moved to 5.5 points and requires a victory from the final round to make a Woman Grandmaster result. She faces M. Broomfield, a young junior player with a rating lower than hers. Her possibility to make it looks bright.

The two other Indians had a good day. National under- 18 champion P. Mahesh Chandran scored over lower rated Martin J. Simons with black pieces to move up to 5.5 points. He is in a tie for the 20- 29 placings.

Reigning World under-18 girls champion Aarthie Ramaswamy also won with black pieces against R. Alan Barton. She moved to 4.5 points and has moved up to a tie for the 40-49 placings.

Top seeded and favourite Julian Hodgson overcame initials hiccups to be assured of a shared title. He beat joint leader Chris Ward to move up to eight points. He sits on a comfortable one point lead with a round to go. Behind him are: J. Speelman, M. Hebden, C. Ward and M. Chandler with seven points.
