Four titles for Vijay Anand

MADURAI, AUG. 15. R. Vijay Anand, a tenth standard student of Cuddalore, won four titles in the Tamilnadu State Junior Badminton championships sponsored by Le Chatelier Badminton Club and conducted by Madurai District Badminton Association at MGR Race Course Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

Vijay Anand won the Boys under-19 singles title defeating his doubles partner C.Dayalan of Le Chatelier School, Madurai 15-0, 15-3 and then won the under-19 doubles title having Dayalan with him, he beat the top seeded C.T.Anand and Joe Pradeep 15-7, 15-8 in the under-19 doubles final.

Like wise, he won Boys under-16 singles title defeating N.Raghuram of Chennai 15-0, 15-4 and partnering Malik Jalal, he beat Chetiz Prakash and Raghuram of Madurai in the under-16 doubles final.

Vijay Anand played superbly in the singles with his fine smashes, tosses and drop shots, conceding only 3 points for Dayalan in under-19 singles and only 4 points for Raghuram in the under-16 singles final.

In both the doubles also he played extremely well and was instrumental in winning them.

A. Divya, a XI standard student of Bala Vidya Mandir, Chennai won the girls under-19 singles title defeating V.Nithya, a XI standards student of MAK Matriculation School, Chennai 11-5, 13- 10. It was a a sweet revenge for Divya as she lost to V.Nithya earlier in the girls under-16 singles final. Divya took the first game at 15-5. But in the second Nithiya led 10-1 and was about to take the game, but Divya put up a spirited fight, levelled the score at 10-all, surviving five game points, and then went on to clinch the game at 13-10 and the title.

However, V.Nithya, in partnership with Rashmi Radhakrishnan won the girls under-19 doubles title, and with the under-16 singles title, she won three titles.

Mr.V. Thangavelu, District Collector, Madurai presided and gave away the prizes. Mr.V.Neethi Mohan Secretary, M.D.B.A and the chairman of the organising committee welcomed the gathering. Mr.Michael Chatelier, presented mementos to the Chief guest and officials, proposed a vote of thanks.

The results: Boys under-19 singles final: R. Vijay Anand (CDL) bt C. Dayalan(MDU) 15-0, 15-3. Doubles final: R. Vijay Anand and C. Dayalan bt C.T. Anand and Joe Pradeep 15-7, 15-8.

Semifinals: C.T. Anand and Joe Pradeep bt Tarun and Senthilkumar (SLM) 15-11, 15-10; C. Dayalan and Vijay Anand bt P.L. Kamesh and D. Manoj (CHE) 11-15, 15-9, 15-10.

Boys under-13 singles final: Aditya Elango (CHE) bt R. Vignesh (VGR) 15-12, 15-13.

Boys under-10 singles final: S. Swaminathan (CBE) bt M. R. Manikandan (CHE) 15-13, 12-15, 15-0.

Girls under-19 singles final: A. Divya (CHE) bt V.Nithya (CHE) 11-5, 13-10. Semifinals: V. Nithya bt Reshmi Radhakrishan (CHE) 11-1, 11-0; A. Divya (CHE) bt G. Surekha (SLM) 11-3, 11-6; Doubles final: V. Nithya and Reshmi Radhakrishnan (CHE) bt G. Surekha and N. Divya (SLM) 15-3, 15-1; Semifinals: V. Nithya and Reshmi Radhakrishnan bt Nitin Arun Naik and Manisha Sureshkumar (CBE) 15-1, 15-2; G. Surekha and N.Divya bt Abrami and Kavitha (MDU) 15-9, 10-15, 15-2.

Girls under-16 singles final: V. Nithya (CHE) bt A. Divya (CHE) 11-7, 11-5. Semifinals: V. Nithya bt Abirami (MDU) 11-2, 11-1; A. Divya bt Anees Kowser (CHE) 11-5, 11-3. Doubles final: V. Nithya and Anees Kowser (CHE) bt A. Divya and Priya Darshini (CHE) 15-8, 15-4. Semifinals: V. Nithya and Anees Kowser bt Neeti Arun Naik and Manasha (CBE) 15-1, 15-2; A. Divya and Priyadarshini bt C. Mathura and Sweyha (SLM) 15-2, 15-2.

Girls under-13 singles final: Mansha Suresh (CBE) bt Niti Arun Nair (CBE) 13-10, 13-10.

Girls under-10 singles final: Amrin Mubarak (CHE) bt Subatra (SLM) 11-7, 11-2.
