Norwegian effort to find survivors fails
MOSCOW, AUG. 20. Norwegian divers today failed in their attempts
to find a way into the ill-fated submarine, Kursk, as hopes of
finding survivors among the 118 crew appeared to be receding
fast. The divers failed to open the badly damaged escape hatch of
the vessel and rescuers may now try to use a powerful crane to
wrest it open, the Deputy Russian premier, Mr. Ilya Klebanov,
told Russia's RTR TV from the rescue scene.
Due to heavy damage of the emergency exit hatch, the British
state-of-the-art LR-5 mini-submarine will not be able to latch
onto the dock with the submarine, he said.
