Plea to declare Old Bhubaneswar heritage zone

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR, AUG. 20. Noted environmentalist and a former Minister, Mr. Banka Behary Das, has demanded that the temple city of Old Bhubaneswar be declared Ekamra Kshetra (heritage zone) in order to protect its archaeological sites and save the area from the building mafia.

At a press conference here, Mr. Das said even though the Orissa Government had discussed the heritage zone project report prepared by the INTACH way back in 1989, nothing had been done to set up a State level Heritage Board for the purpose.

Stating that as many as 28 high rise buildings had come up in old Bhubaneswar area, Mr. Das said the ``unholy alliance'' between private builders, politicians and corrupt officers of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority had succeeded in nipping the heritage zone idea in the bud.
