By Our Corporate Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. Cris Infac of CRISIL has released a report on the retail e-commerce market in India which details the current level of penetration and usage of on-line retailing in the country. Based on a survey of Internet users in the four metro cities in India, the report finds that 84 per cent of Indian Internet users are aware of e-commerce and 11 per cent have made at least one purchase on the Internet. The total e-commerce revenue clocked in 1999-2000 was Rs. 10.60 crores and is expected to grow to Rs. 421 crores by 2004-05.

The report forecasts what is likely to sell best on the Net. For instance, it expects books, music and ticketing will be major markets; while those for groceries, apparel, jewellery and toys will be restricted.
