Chatterjee surges into lead

CALCUTTA, AUG. 26. Fifth seeded Laltu Chatterjee of Bengal surged into sole lead winning his sixth round match to net 5.5 points in the inaugural all-India Fide rated chess meet here at Khudiram Indoor Practice Centre on Saturday. Chatterjee, one of the overnight leaders, got the better of Ram Kumar Mishra of Madhya Pradesh to steer clear of the rest who did not have a favourable day.

Top seeded Suvrajit Saha of Bengal faced state-mate and second seeded IM Shankar Roy. The two, however, agreed for a draw after 27 moves. Both Saha and Roy, playing their second consecutive draw, tallied 5 points to fall to second spot. Another overnight joint leader, S. Satyakam of Orissa too faced a reverse losing to Syed Ruhul Kabir of Bangladesh. Satyakam joined Mishra in the third spot with 4.5 points each.

The second position remained a crowded field with six players including the top two seeds - Saha and Roy. Others joining them on 5 points are Kabir, Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (Bengal), Nilotpal Ghosh (Bengal) and Yanur Rehman (Bangladesh).

Deepan Chakravorthy (TN) 4.
