Mahanta hits out at Assam PCC chief
GUWAGATI, AUG. 26. The Assam Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar
Mahanta today alleged the Congress in the State led by Mr. Tarun
Gogoi (MP) was having a secret understanding with the ULFA, a
banned outfit. Mr. Mahanta said the State Congress had been
``soft'' towards the underground outfit since Mr. Gogoi became
the state unit chief.
Mr. Mahanta, also the AGP president, told presspersons here that
Mr. Gogoi being the APCC president, held at a public meeting near
Nalbari said his party was ready to concede all the demands of
the ULFA if it came to power. Subsequently, the erstwhile AICC
president, Mr. Sitaram Kesri had to apologise to ULFA leaders for
some of his statements, he said.
The Chief Minister said Mr. Gogoi on the one hand ``extends his
support to the cause of secession of Assam spearheaded by ULFA
and on the other rejects the demand of more powers or autonomy to
Assam advocated by the AGP. He was supporting what is against the
Constitution, integrity and sovereignty of India and rejecting
the demand made within the frame work of the Constitution,'' Mr.
Mahanta said.
He also alleged that the Congress when it was in power at the
Centre, allowed Pakistan and China to grab thousands of square km
of Indian territory without any hesitation. ``The party had also
tried its best to implicate me in the LoC case. But they
failed'', Mr. Mahanta said.
