MYSORE, AUG. 29. The Supreme Court verdict today staying the bail order issued by the Principal and Sessions Court, Mysore, on Monday, for the release of 51 alleged associates of the forest brigand, Veerappan, has come as a shock for the detenus. The prisoners' kin, who arrived at the jail this morning expecting the release, returned dejected.

The advocate for Mr. Abdul Kareem, father of Shakeel Ahmed, a police officer slain by Veerappan in 1992, told the court that he had received a fax message from his representative in the Supreme Court that the bail order passed had been stayed.

The Public Prosecutor, Mr. Ashwin Kumar Joshi, submitted a memo to the court saying the State Director-General of Police had informed him of the development.

However, counsel for the some of the accused, Mr. Venugopal, told the court that Mr. Kareem's advocate and the Public Prosecutor should file an affidavit. Mr. Manjunath, lawyer fro Mr. Kareem, filed an affidavit, while Mr. Joshi submitted a memo restraining the release of the detenus.

Mr. Venugopal prepared two objections to the stay granted by the Supreme Court, and faxed them to the Chief Justice of India. The objections were filed on behalf of Ms. Lakshmi, widow of Iyan Dorai, an associate of Veerappan who was killed, and David Simon, alleged mastermind behind the Palar landmine blast in which 22 STF personnel lost their lives.

As a precautionary measure, security was provided at the residence of Mr. Abdul Kareem here.
